Hidden City Philadelphia has teamed up with Obscura Society Philly to explore the history and mythology of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.

This tour will be a kind of combo platter. We'll start off with a brief history of the Philadelphia Navy Yard, then we'll enter Receiving Station Square, one of the former shipyard's few remaining vacant buildings. The U-shaped, Colonial Revival-style complex once served as a barracks for U.S. Marines.

Inside, the folks from Atlas Obscura will talk about one of the 20th century's most bizarre hoaxes, the Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly involved teleporting a naval destroyer to Norfolk, Virginia and back. After that, we'll walk the length of the massive building's third floor, which is a monument to peeling paint. There will plenty of time to take photos.

  • Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes for walking and climbing.
  • We will meet at the corner of 11th and Normandy at the Navy Yard
  • Please bring your own flashlight.
  • Participants will need to follow the guide closely at all times to maintain safe conditions.
  • Participants are able to take photos.
