Judged by the TV news, Camden looks like a city on a terrible losing streak. And in fact Camden does suffer from high levels of crime and poverty--but that's not the whole story. Join Camden resident and structural engineer Patrick Miner for a wide-ranging tour of the city that "bikesplores" aspects of Camden that rarely get reported--its parks, buildings, neighborhoods and infrastructure.
Beginning in Roosevelt Park in front of Camden City Hall (Point A), the route weaves through Downtown and North Camden before crossing the Cooper River into Cramer Hill. After traversing the River Avenue business district, the tour enters Cooper River Park. Before circling back to downtown and culminating on the Delaware waterfront, the tour ends at Cooper River Distillers whiskey distillery on 4th Street (Point B).
Sites of interest along the way include the gorgeous residential architecture of Linden Street, the site of the former waterfront prison, new buffered bike lanes and wayfinding signage, the historic State Street bridge, the River Avenue business district, the Camden Greenway (part of the Circuit), Camden High School, the Lanning Square neighborhood, and spectacular views of the Philadelphia skyline and Ben Franklin Bridge. (Those who want more can enjoy a production tour of the distillery, which occupies an old warehouse.)
Getting there: Arrive at Camden City Hall (Point A) by taking PATCO (towards Lindenwold) to City Hall Station (bicycles are allowed), or bike over the Ben Franklin Bridge and go three blocks south on 5th Street.
What to bring: Bicycle and helmet, water bottle, small backpack for keys/wallet/phone.
Timeline: Arrive at 2 PM, ride begins at 2:15 PM. The tour will take about two hours, about half of which will be riding, and half stopping and talking.
Pace/difficulty: Ride distance is 10 miles. The tour will involve easy, leisurely bicycling on flat terrain. Some streets and sidewalks are in poor condition so expect bumps. We will stay together as a group at all times with a “lead” and a “sweep” in the front and back respectively.
Time: 2 PM to 5 PM (including happy hour)
Place: Meet in Roosevelt Park in front of Camden City Hall
