Please join us in celebrating the release of photographer Matthew Christopher's "Abandoned America: The Age of Consequences" with a talk and book signing.
Registration for the talk is closed, however the reception and book signing before and after the talk are open to the public and all are welcome to attend.
"Abandoned America" chronicles nearly a decade of work in 240 lush pages, capturing a variety of defunct locations--as well as the histories of many sites that are now lost. Philadelphia is, unfortunately, all-too-well represented with Church of the Transfiguration, St. Boniface, St. Bonaventure, Holmesburg Prison, and Lansdowne Theatre making an appearance.
"It’s romantic, it’s nostalgic, it’s wistful, it’s provocative. It’s about time, nature, mortality, disinvestment." --Joann Greco, The Atlantic Cities
The doors open at 6PM and everyone is welcome to stop by for the first hour. There will be refreshments and a chance to purchase the book and have it signed by Matt. Seating is limited for Matt's slideshow presentation, which starts at 7PM. Please register HERE. Admission is free for Hidden City members, $5 for the general public. We expect the event to fill up quickly, so grab a ticket while you can.
The Q&A session that follows should be fascinating. For instance, we'd like to know how Matt finds and gets permission to shoot these places, whether he worries about all the asbestos and pigeon poop he's breathed in, and what's the scariest/weirdest/most amazing thing he's seen inside all of those decaying churches, schools and factories.
Matt is the creator of the Abandoned America website and an occasional contributor to Hidden City. Thanks to a series of photography workshops at derelict spaces, he has raised over $45,000 for maintenance, restoration, and preservation of the endangered places in which they are held.
