Do you love the Wissahickon? Here’s your chance to take a hike with Hidden City Daily co-editor Brad Maule as your guide, then enjoy the Friends of the Wissahickon’s 90th anniversary picnic and benefit. We’re limiting this special package deal on Saturday, July 12th to just 10 people, so grab a ticket while you can.

Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW) have championed the wilderness of the Wissahickon Valley for 90 years now, and to mark that milestone, they’re hosting a picnic with catered food, beer from Stone Brewing Co., a giant anniversary cake from Bredenbeck’s Bakery in Chestnut Hill, and live bluegrass from the Bacchus Boys.

Brad has trekked the Wissahickon’s many trails for at least 15 years, and has gotten intimately familiar with them as he’s undertaken his One Man’s Trash project this year. To help celebrate FOW’s anniversary, Brad will lead a hike through his favorite parts of the park: Cresheim Valley, the Livezey mill, Fingerspan, and Gorgas Creek.

The $40 price tag is a bit more than we usually charge, however it’s $5 off for Hidden City members, and it covers a lot of ground (approximately five miles) AND admission to the FOW picnic, including all food and drink, at Pachella Field. Most importantly, $30 of each ticket will go to the FOW.

The hike will last approximately three and a half hours and covers some challenging terrain. Sturdy shoes/boots are required and long pants are recommended.

The hike will conclude at Pachella Field, where the picnic is being held.

Getting there: SEPTA: The Chestnut Hill West Line departs Center City stations beginning at 11:15am and arrives at Allen Lane at 11:44am. If you’re driving, there is on-street parking near the station on Cresheim Road, Nippon Street, and Mt Airy Avenue. Please do NOT park in the station’s lot. For the CHW train schedule click HERE.

Getting home: SEPTA: The 27 bus is door-to-door from Pachella Field to Center City. If you drive to Allen Lane, we will arrange a ride back to your car. For the 27 bus schedule click HERE.
